LUCKNOW, June 1 -- Two days after allegations of large-scale irregularities in the use of expensive drugs and injections under Asadhya Yojana meant for cancer patients at King George's Medical University (KGMU)'s urology department came to light, the medical university on Sunday removed all contractual staff posted at the department's medicine counter for their alleged involvement in the scam, said KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh. Without specifying their number, he said they have been attached to the office of HoD and directed not to leave Lucknow pending completion of the inquiry. Singh said a five-member inquiry committee formed to probe the matter was likely to submit its report by Monday. He said strict action, including termination of services and recovery of losses, will be taken if any employee is found guilty. The probe was initiated after officials noticed a sharp rise in medicine expenditure under the Asadhya Yojana, from around Rs.10 lakh per month in October-November 2025 to nearly Rs.40 lakh in February 2026 and over Rs.45 lakh in March. htc...
