LUCKNOW, Sept. 22 -- A day after the death of a third-semester nursing student, a sit-in by her classmates at King George's Medical University (KGMU) on Monday brought allegations of denial of leave and violation of nursing norms to the fore. Students gathered at the nursing department following the death of Divyanshi Yadav, a BSc Nursing student, and raised slogans demanding action against those responsible. They alleged that Yadav had been unwell for several days but was not granted leave despite her illness. They claimed she later went to Varanasi for treatment, where she died on September 19. The protesters also alleged that nursing authorities were violating Indian Nursing Council norms. Senior KGMU officials, including dean of nursing Amita Pandey, spokesperson Prof KK Singh and Dr Bhaskar Agarwal, reached the spot and held talks with the students. According to a KGMU statement, Yadav developed fever on September 16 and was examined at the Medicine OPD, where she was prescribed medication and underwent investigations. The university said her tests did not show any significant abnormality and her platelet count was nearly normal at the time. On September 17, her parents requested that she be allowed to return to Varanasi to rest at home, following which she left for Varanasi, the statement said.
