Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 6 -- The Kerala government will legally challenge the Election Commission of India's (ECI) decision to implement the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office said on Wednesday. The decision was taken during an all-party meeting convened by CM Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. All parties, except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), present in the meeting backed the state's decision to move legally against the SIR exercise, the CM's office said. "The CM informed the meeting that in the context of the upcoming local body elections, legal opinion will be sought as a government and as a political party to question the SIR. While a revised voter list is in place following the Lok Sabha elections last year, the move to implement a radical voter list revision based on the 2002 list is both unscientific and ill-intentioned, the CM told the meeting," the statement from his office said. The parties attending the meeting shared the opinion that the problems arising out of the SIR exercise were manifold and that it was being implemented with a specific agenda. "Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan agreed with the concerns shared by the CM and said he is ready to become a party to the case if the government moves the top court against it," the CM's office said. The development comes days after the ruling DMK and its allies in Tamil Nadu on Sunday decided to move the Supreme Court to challenge the SIR of electoral rolls. Last month, the poll body announced the launch of the second phase of the SIR across 12 states and Union Territories. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal are due for assembly elections in 2026. The enumeration process of the exercise began in these states on Tuesday. SIR, which began in Bihar, had become a major political flashpoint ahead of the state assembly elections. Opposition parties have staged protests in Parliament and alleged that ECI was acting at the behest of the BJP. The government has dismissed the protests and said that infiltrators cannot have the right to vote....
