India, July 18 -- India is all set to have its own K-pop girl group with HYBE INDIA, the subsidiary arm of the global entertainment label behind BTS, conducting countrywide auditions. And CEO Damien Woochang Lee describes India as one of the world's most culturally dynamic music ecosystems.
"While Bollywood remains an important force, the rapid rise of independent artistes is reshaping the market into a genre-fluid ecosystem. We aim to nurture that by connecting local talents to HYBE's global network," he says, explaining his vision for the label: "We're working to turn Indian voices into global stories - by building the infrastructure that can carry them there."
The label's multinational girl group KATSEYE's success, is a testament to their global hunt approach. And Lee now is bringing that to India. "There's an opportunity for a new kind of female role model - someone who looks like them, sounds like them, and shares their experiences, while representing those experiences on the global stage," he says, adding that the talent pool in India has left him impressed.
The label is also building relationships with Indian artistes, like the recent collaboration between LE SSERAFIM and singer Guru Randhawa on BOOMPALA. Lee shares, "India has one of the world's most diverse musical traditions, and there is potential for collaborations between Indian artistes and HYBE's global roster - but they should always be driven by the music itself, not by the idea of creating buzz."
While K-pop acts including Taemin, EXO's Chen and Xiumin, and GOT7's BamBam and Jackson Wang have all performed in India, the fans are still awaiting a BTS concert on home soil. Lee has a measured take on it. "We plan to move forward thoughtfully as we deepen our understanding of the market. Our priority is to listen closely to the community and ensure that everything we develop is grounded in what genuinely connects with Indian fans," he says....
