Mumbai, Oct. 28 -- Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday declared that India is aiming to achieve 10,000 million metric tonnes per year of port handling capacity, and place itself among the top five countries in the global shipbuilding industry. Addressing the inauguration of the India Maritime Week 2025 at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, Shah said: "Our goal is to become one of the top five ship building countries of the world, and hence we are developing new mega and deep draft ports. We have completed the road map to connect maritime industry with the world industry." The home minister noted that the maritime sector would play a vital role in expanding India's influence in international trade and logistics. Later in the day, Shah laid the foundation stone of the BJP state unit's new office in Mumbai. During the event, he urged party workers to ensure that the Opposition is "wiped out" during the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra. "They shouldn't be seen even with the help of binoculars," he added. Shah also noted that the party does not run on "crutches in Maharashtra but on its own strength". "I believe that a party which cannot uphold democracy within its own functioning can never protect the democracy of the nation," he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on October 29 to chair the Global Maritime CEO Forum, the flagship event of India Maritime Week. The forum will serve as a key platform for dialogue on sustainable maritime growth, resilient supply chains, green shipping and inclusive blue economy strategies....
