IIITs resolve to integrate 'BKT' modules into curriculum
PRAYAGRAJ, April 27 -- A two-day national symposium on "Integrating Bharatiya Knowledge Treasure (BKT) into IIIT Curricula" concluded on Sunday at the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A), with participating institutions reaching a strong consensus on developing and implementing a structured framework to incorporate BKT across all IIITs in the near future.
The symposium brought together directors, academicians, researchers, and policy experts from various IIITs and allied institutions, facilitating in-depth discussions on embedding India's rich knowledge traditions into contemporary technical education.
A key highlight of the concluding day was the mentored thematic round-table discussions, which led to the formation of domain-specific Inter-IIIT BKT Academic Groups. These groups have been tasked with designing a practical and actionable roadmap for integrating BKT into curricula across disciplines.
The symposium identified several thematic clusters, including computational linguistics (with a focus on Paninian grammar, natural language processing, and large language models), governance and Arthashastra, blockchain and ancient supply chain management, ancient and Vedic mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics, materials, design and manufacturing, cognitive sciences and mental wellness, and liberal/performing arts and digital humanities.
Each cluster engaged in detailed deliberations to develop practical strategies for integration. Key outcomes included proposals for new course titles, multidisciplinary minor programmes, open electives, audit-based add-on courses, and the incorporation of BKT modules into existing courses. The discussions also emphasised collaborative academic models among IIITs to ensure effective implementation.
Addressing the valedictory session, Dr Atul Kothari highlighted the importance of reconnecting modern education with India's intellectual heritage. He said that integrating Bharatiya Knowledge Systems into technical curricula is essential for creating a holistic, contextually grounded, and globally relevant education model.
A total of 25 IIITs participated in the two-day deliberations. As many as 11 directors from IIITs across the country shared their perspectives, and institutions are expected to soon finalise their respective modules for implementation.
IIIT-A Registrar Prof Mandar Subash Karykarte presented a brief report, while Prof Sanjay Singh conducted the proceedings. Prof RS. Varma, Director of MNNIT-Allahabad, also addressed the gathering....
