GORAKHPUR, June 18 -- Scenes of grief unfolded in Surauli village of Deoria district on Wednesday as the mortal remains of Shivanand Chaursiya, who was killed in a maritime attack near Oman, reached his native village. Shivanand was working as an engine fitter aboard a merchant vessel operating in the waters off the Oman coast when it came under attack on June 10. He was among three Indian crew members who lost their lives in the incident. The vessel, carrying 24 Indian crew members, had come under fire near the Strait of Hormuz, close to Oman. While 21 crew members were rescued safely, three Indians went missing and were later confirmed dead following search and recovery operations. Family members broke down upon seeing the coffin carrying the body of the deceased, who is survived by his wife, two children, and elderly parents. The body was received by district administration officials and family members before being taken to Surauli village for the last rites. A large number of relatives, villagers, and local representatives gathered to pay their final respects as the village mourned the tragic loss. Shivanand's mortal remains first arrived in Gorakhpur on Wednesday before being transported to his native village in Deoria. The arrival of his body brought an emotional end to days of uncertainty and anguish for the family, as preparations began for his final rites. Shivanand's elder brother, Rampravesh Chaursiya, confirmed that Rahul Gandhi had called him and expressed sympathy for the family. "Rahul Gandhi ji called and offered his condolences. He enquired about the well-being of our family and assured us of support during this difficult time," Rampravesh Chaursiya said. According to family sources, Gandhi also sought details about the circumstances surrounding the attack and the condition of the victim's family. He reportedly stressed the need for adequate assistance and support for the bereaved family.
