hc set to hear asaram's plea against life term daily from feb 16
Jodhpur, Feb. 11 -- The Rajasthan high court has scheduled a day-to-day hearing from February 16 on self-styled godman Asaram's appeal against his life sentence for sexually abusing a minor, ruling out further adjournments in line with Supreme Court directives on time-bound appeals.
The division bench of justice Arun Monga and justice Yogendra Kumar Purohit heard submissions on Monday from senior advocate Vivek Raj Singh Bajwa, who appeared for Asaram via video link from Jaipur. Bajwa argued that the voluminous paperwork warranted physical arguments and sought time to appear in Jodhpur next week. Senior advocate Vineet Jain, for a co-accused, cited inability to appear and requested availability next Monday. In a related appeal, a newly appointed lawyer filed a vakalatnama and asked for preparation time.
The bench ordered hearings to commence on February 16 for all listed appeals by Asaram and co-accused, to proceed daily at the end of the board session or at 2pm, whichever is earlier, until arguments conclude.
A special court sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in April 2018 for raping a minor at his ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur in 2013.
