LUCKNOW, Sept. 10 -- The Allahabad high court's Lucknow bench has sought an explanation over the death of a newborn who was allegedly unable to get a ventilator, specialist treatment and an oxygen-supported bed at government hospitals. A division bench of justice Rajan Roy and justice Manjive Shukla directed senior health officials and heads of KGMU, RMLIMS and SGPGI to join proceedings through video conference on September 11. The baby was born at Government Autonomous Medical College, Sultanpur, where congenital complications were detected after birth. The court was told the college had neither a ventilator nor a paediatric surgeon. The newborn was referred to KGMU, RMLIMS and SGPGI but could not be admitted due to a lack of beds and died within 24 hours. The court questioned the lack of basic facilities at newly opened medical colleges and directed officials to explain what mechanism exists to ensure adequate healthcare services. htc...
