Girl student dies after burn injuries inside school bathroom
PATNA, Aug. 28 -- A Class 5 student (12) of Amla Tola Kankya Vidyalaya died on Wednesday after she allegedly suffered severe burn injuries under mysterious circumstances inside her school bathroom in the Chitkohra area under Gardanibagh police station in Patna, police said.
The girl, whose upper body was badly burnt, succumbed during treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). Police recovered a bottle containing kerosene oil with about half a litre left from the bathroom, which has been sealed. A forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has begun an investigation.
The incident triggered chaos on the school premises as a large crowd of local residents ransacked furniture and tore important papers. A scuffle broke out with the police, during which an officer trying to pacify the mob was slapped. Some teachers fled the school out of fear, and police later deployed additional forces to maintain order. The mob also attempted to block Chitkohra Mor in protest.
Police said the incident came to light around 10.30 am when staff noticed smoke from the bathroom. "It appeared that she went inside, poured kerosene and set herself on fire," an officer said. A cook was the first to spot her.
Patna (Central) SP Diksha said the girl had not attended school for the past five days but came on Wednesday and went directly to the bathroom during class hours. "The CCTV footage is being scanned. We are probing all angles, including how she got the kerosene," she said.
The SP confirmed that the girl's family and locals vandalised the school and misbehaved with police and teachers after the incident. "The exact cause is still being ascertained," she added....
