Farmer assaulted, run over by tractor over land dispute
Raipur, June 16 -- A 60-year-old farmer died after allegedly being beaten with sticks and run over by a tractor during a dispute over agricultural land in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, police said on Monday.
According to police, the incident took place on Sunday in Pathrai village under Batoli police station limits when the victim and his family went to stop the rival group from ploughing the disputed 6.3-acre farmland. Police arrested all eight accused, including two women, in connection with the case.
The deceased, Hosram Paikra of Silma village, was involved in a long-running dispute with his relative Bajrang Paikra of Pathrai village over ownership of the farmland.
This land originally belonged to Kameshwari, a childless woman who was the wife of Hosram's father's elder brother and also Bajrang's paternal aunt. Hosram claimed rights over the property based on a will, stating that he had taken care of Kameshwari. Bajrang's family, however, also claimed ownership of the land.
The ownership dispute had been contested in revenue courts. While a Tehsildar court had earlier ruled in Hosram's favour, the order was later overturned by an SDM court following an appeal by the rival claimants, escalating tensions between the two families.
Senior police officers rushed to the village after receiving information about the incident. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, an officer said.
"Eight accused, including two women, have been arrested and statements from family members and the accused are being recorded," said Sitapur sub-divisional officer of police Rajendra Mandavi.
"The arrested individuals have been identified as Umesh, who was allegedly driving the tractor, Bajrang, Bhuvneshwar, Manoj, Raghunandan, Bodhan, Kamli and Pyari. The tractor allegedly used in the crime has been seized," he said, adding that further investigation is underway....
