Family alleges police negligence, stages protest in Basti
GORAKHPUR, Feb. 10 -- The body of Ajay Gaur, a sub-inspector posted at Prasrampur police station and missing for the past four days, was recovered from the Saryu (Ghaghra) River near Ayodhya on Sunday evening.
The recovery triggered tension and protests in Basti on Monday, as the officer's family alleged police negligence and demanded a high-level probe.
The deceased officer's younger brother, Arun Kumar Gaur-an ADM-rank officer posted in Jhansi-and his wife, a PCS officer, accused the police of failing to act promptly despite clear warning signs. They demanded the suspension of the entire staff of Prasrampur PS and sought an impartial, high-level investigation into the case.
Speaking to media persons at the post-mortem house, Arun Kumar Gaur raised serious questions about the preliminary investigation. "The officer's vehicle was found at one location, while his body was recovered from a different place. How is this possible? There is clear negligence, and a conspiracy cannot be ruled out," he said. He demanded the registration of a named case and an unbiased probe, and questioned the circle officer over a delayed response.
He further alleged that police officials ignored the urgency of the situation. "Had the police acted in time, my brother's life could have been saved. We want a transparent and fair investigation," he stated.
Sanjeev Tyagi, DIG, Basti, confirmed that the brother of the deceased sub-inspector submitted a formal complaint at his office on Monday. He said an FIR will be registered based on the post-mortem report, which was conducted on Monday afternoon.
SI Ajay Gaur had been missing since February 5. According to family members, his phone was reachable during the last conversation but was switched off later that evening, after which all contact was lost. The subsequent recovery of his body from the Saryu River has deepened suspicions.
DIG Sanjeev Tyagi said, "Post-mortem findings, forensic evidence, and technical details are being examined. No possibility is being ruled out at this stage." He assured that the investigation would be thorough and impartial.
Police officials stated that the last CCTV footage shows SI Gaur riding a motorcycle with a sanitation worker shortly before he went missing. CCTV recordings, call detail records, and other technical evidence is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events....
