LUCKNOW, Oct. 24 -- A CBI court in Ghaziabad on Friday sentenced a former sub-postmaster in Agra to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.25,000 for misappropriating Rs.15.27 lakh deposited by 51 account holders. Ved Prakash Pandey, the then sub-postmaster at Beg Muzaffar Khan post office in Agra, was convicted after trial in a case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on December 17, 2008. According to the CBI, 51 depositors had opened monthly income scheme (MIS) and time deposit scheme (TDS) accounts at the post office and handed over their initial deposits to Pandey. He issued passbooks recording the deposits under his signature and entered the amounts in the passbooks and ledgers. However, the deposits were not recorded in other mandatory documents, including transaction lists and daily account summaries sent to the head office for reconciliation, the CBI said. This allegedly enabled Pandey to misappropriate Rs.15.27 lakh, causing a corresponding loss to the postal department. The agency filed a chargesheet against Pandey on September 30, 2009. Following the trial, the court convicted and sentenced him on Friday. htc...
