Elderly crushed to death by wild elephant
Silchar, May 3 -- A 63-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Assam's Goalpara district early Saturday after the animal entered a residential area, forest officials said.
The deceased was identified as Saraswati Shil, a resident of Milonpara village under Rakhasini Jhar Part-I area. Officials said the incident took place at around 3.30 am when the elephant strayed into the locality.
According to forest officials, Shil was fatally attacked during the incident, and her body was later recovered by police and forest personnel who rushed to the spot after receiving information from locals. "Following reports of the elephant attack, our team immediately reached the area, drove the elephant away from the settlement, and recovered the victim's body," a senior forest official said.
Divisional forest officer, Goalpara, Tejas Mariswamy, told HT the department has launched a detailed inquiry into the incident and immediate steps would be taken in order to prevent further attacks.
