Elderly anaemia a major health concern: Experts
LUCKNOW, Nov. 7 -- About 24% of the world's elderly population is affected by anaemia, and in severe cases, it may be associated with a mortality rate of up to 40%, said Prof Vijai Tilak of Banaras Hindu University during the opening of the four-day HAEMATOCON 2025 conference in Lucknow on Thursday.
He explained that anaemia in older adults can result from nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid, as well as chronic inflammation and malignancies.
Prof Tilak also pointed out that nearly 40% of elderly patients with B12 deficiency present with neurological symptoms such as memory decline, depression or neuropathy, which can be mistaken for dementia.
The conference featured joint sessions of the Indian College of Haematology with API, FOGSI and paediatric associations. Neonatal anaemia and its management were discussed by Dr Nishant Verma, while Dr Amita Pandey of KGMU spoke on life-threatening intravascular coagulation in ICU settings. HTC...
