Lakhimpur Kheri, Aug. 13 -- To mark World Elephant Day, a grand feast was organised for the camp elephants at the South Sonaripur Range headquarters of the Dudhwa National Park on Tuesday.Dudhwa currently houses 25 camp elephants that play an important role in tourism, patrolling, rhino monitoring, and assisting in human-wildlife conflict situations.Deputy director of Dudhwa, Jagdish R, said that along with the feast, a health camp was also held. During the camp, park veterinarian Dr Mohd Talha and his team examined the elephants, provided de-worming medicine, liver tonics, and other essential medical care. Dudhwa's senior-most mahout Irshad Ali was honored with the 'Gaj Gaurav' award by the Union ministry of forests and climate change at a ceremony in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday.Deputy director Jagdish R said Irshad Ali was recognised for his long and exemplary service in training and handling the park's camp elephants. Serving in Dudhwa since 1994, Ali has trained several elephants.Speaking over the phone after receiving the award, Irshad Ali said he felt deeply honored and overjoyed by the recognition.
