Cylinder seizures, fire incident raise safety concerns
LUCKNOW, April 1 -- A crackdown on black-marketing of domestic LPG cylinders in Lucknow brought public safety concerns to the forefront, after officials seized a large stock of cylinders and a separate incident of illegal gas refilling triggered a fire.
The food and civil supplies department conducted a raid in the Alambagh area on Tuesday, recovering over 50 domestic cylinders from a house and vehicle. During a raid in New Sardari Kheda, authorities seized 40 cylinders from a residence belonging to accused Sunil Kumar and 12 more from a vehicle.
An FIR was registered against the accused under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
A major accident was averted in Kakori area of Lucknow on Tuesday morning, exposing the hazards of illegal gas refilling.
A van caught fire near Durgaganj crossing on Hardoi Road while LPG was being transferred illegally from a domestic cylinder into the vehicle using an electronic device. According to police, a short circuit in the machine triggered a spark, setting the van ablaze. The owner and his son managed to escape.
Firefighters from Chowk fire station brought the blaze under control while police seized the domestic cylinder.
ADM (civil supplies) Jyoti Gautam said domestic cylinders are not designed for commercial use or refilling into vehicles, and any tampering can lead to fire.
