Cops: Probe launched into Rapido driver's misbehaviour with judge
Dehradun, Oct. 24 -- Police on Friday launched a probe after registering a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified Rapido cab driver for allegedly threatening a judge in Dehradun, officers said.
Police said the FIR was based on a complaint by Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge Anjali Benjwal, who said that on Wednesday, she had booked a Rapido ride from her home at Judges Colony, Balbir Road, to Sauda Saroli near Maldevta.
Benjwal alleged that after starting the ride and providing the OTP, the driver initially asked about the air conditioning before demanding double the fare, claiming the destination was 9 kilometres away. When she refused to pay extra beyond the standard booked fare, the driver allegedly diverted the vehicle into an "unlit, secluded, dead-end alley" instead of staying on the main road.
The complainant immediately contacted her court clerk and alerted him that the driver was taking her to an isolated location. She also placed an emergency call to Rapido's support centre to report the intimidation and demand for extra money, the FIR said. The driver allegedly hurled threats at her, boasting of his "strong police connections" and making inappropriate remarks targeting her gender.
The FIR added that ppon realising that the lane was a dead end, he turned the vehicle around and drove back to the gates of Judges Colony.
Upon returning to the residence gate, the driver allegedly cancelled the ride and created a public disturbance. He intimidated the duty guard, identified as Guard Thapliyal, when questioned about his actions.
The FIR was registered under Section 115(2) (Voluntarily causing hurt), Section 127(2) (Wrongful confinement), Section 308(3) (Extortion / Attempt to commit extortion), Section 351(2) (Criminal intimidation), Section 352 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of BNS at Dalanwala police station.
