choksi likely to seek asylum in belgium: officials
New Delhi, April 8 -- Anticipating an adverse outcome in the recently concluded extradition proceedings in Belgium, fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi is understood to have applied for asylum there, people familiar with the matter said.
Indian agencies have received informal indications of the move, as asylum applications in Europe are typically confidential. New Delhi may not receive official confirmation until a decision is taken.
A court in Antwerp heard detailed arguments from Choksi and Belgian prosecutors, representing India, on New Delhi's extradition request on March 3. During the hearings, prosecutors rejected Choksi's allegations of torture and abduction. The court's ruling, which is confidential and non-binding on the Belgian government, was to be sent to Belgium's minister for security and interior, Bernard Quintin....
