Dehradun, Aug. 21 -- While it is not uncommon for schools in the hills of Uttarakhand to remain closed due to the threat of wild animals, schools in Narayanbagar of Chamoli district will, for the first time, remain shut for two days due to a stray dog menace, officials said. The education department on Thursday issued an order directing the closure of 10 government and private schools for two days, amending its Wednesday order for four days of closure after officials realised Sunday (August 23) was already a holiday. The order applies to 10 schools in the Narayanbagar area. The government schools are Adarsh Inter College, Narayanbagar; Government Girls Inter College, Narayanbagar; Government Primary School, Narayanbagar; Government Primary School, Nalagaon; and Government Upper Primary School, Nalagaon. The private schools are Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Narayanbagar; Uttaranchal Vidya Niketan, Narayanbagar; Shri Guru Ram Rai Public School, Panti; Modern Children Academy, Narayanbagar; and Uttarakhand Vidyalaya Niketan, Narayanbagar. Meanwhile, the administration has deployed Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), comprising personnel from the forest, veterinary and revenue departments, to deal with the menace. Chamoli chief education officer Akash Saraswat said, "We received reports from the block education officer about incidents of stray dogs attacking people, particularly children, in the Narayanbagar area... We issued a fresh order on Thursday, directing schools to remain closed for two days." "We will ensure that online classes are conducted for students during this period. The concerned officials and teachers have been directed to ensure this," he said. SDM Narayanbagar Yashvir Singh Rawat said, "Around a half dozen incidents of street dogs attacking people have come to light. To deal with the menace of aggressive stray dogs, we have formed QRTs. Two dogs have been caught so far. I have also written to the district magistrate seeking additional dog catchers"....
