Case lodged as groom's family seeks Rs 9 lakh before wedding
PRAYAGRAJ/VARANASI, Feb. 9 -- A family in Sangam city's Ashok Nagar has lodged a police complaint after their daughter's wedding was abruptly called off by the would-be groom's family following a demand for Rs 9 lakh in dowry.
As per the complaint filed at the Cantonment police station, the woman's marriage had been fixed nearly three years ago with one Sachin of Kanpur. The wedding was scheduled for February 10 this year. However, the would-be groom's family allegedly demanded Rs 9 lakh in dowry in December last year and cancelled the marriage when the demand was not met. Cantonment SHO Sunil Kumar said a named FIR was registered against Sachin, his father Brij Kumar, mother Leelavati, brother Suraj, and other unidentified individuals.
A gang that allegedly uses super glue to jam debit cards in ATMs and then withdraws money from victims' accounts is active in the city, police said. One such case was reported by Durgesh Pratap Singh, a resident of Minto Road, who claimed he lost Rs 20,000 in fraudulent withdrawals.
Two cattle smugglers were arrested after an encounter with police in a locality in Jahanganj police station area of Azamgarh on Sunday, police said and added an illegal pistol and cartridges, one pickup vehicle and one animal were recovered from their possession.
