New Delhi, Sept. 3 -- A bill proposing to introduce a points-based system for drivers that could even lead to cancellation of licence for consistent bad driving is being readied to be presented before Parliament, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday. Under the proposed system, points will be deducted in a graded manner based on the seriousness of traffic violations, with licences liable to suspension or cancellation after a specified limit. "After a particular limit, the licence will get suspended or even cancelled because those who are hugely making mistakes will need to take some stern action against them," Gadkari said at the Indo-Nordic conclave in New Delhi. The system is being proposed against the backdrop of what Gadkari described as the continuing challenge of human behaviour on roads, despite improvements in road engineering and digitalisation. The Chennai Mathematical Institute was involved with formulating the grading system, officials had earlier said. Gadkari also proposed studying the efficacy of a reward-based road-safety model being implemented in Nagpur for wider adoption. The pilot uses artificial intelligence-enabled cameras and scanners to track driving behaviour and rewards motorists who follow traffic rules. The rewards include free petrol, discounts on insurance premiums and offers from participating brands. Gadkari said the model should be studied to encourage people who "never violate the law"....
