B'desh deploys aircraft, warships to guard hilsa from illegal fishing
Jodhpur/Jammu/New Delhi, Oct. 6 -- Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is detained under the National Security Act (NSA), has sought an independent judicial inquiry into the deaths of four people during protests in Leh on September 24.
Wangchuk, currently in Jodhpur Central Jail, urged people to keep "peace and unity" and to continue with the struggle peacefully "in the true Gandhian way of non-violence". He conveyed the message through his brother Ka Tsetan Dorjey Ley and advocate Mustafa Haji, who met him in jail on Saturday, Kargil Democratic Alliance leader Sajjad Kargili said.
"My heartfelt condolences to the families of those people who lost their lives and my prayers with people who are injured and are arrested," Wangchuk was quoted as saying in Kargili's post on X. "There should be an independent Judicial Inquiry into the killing of our four people and unless that is done I am prepared to stay in Jail."
Violence flared up on September 24 when four people were killed and around 100 injured in Ladakh during protests demanding full statehood for Ladakh and protections for jobs and land. The Union government has blamed Wangchuk, who was among the leading figures of the Ladakh statehood movement, for provoking the clashes. A day after the clashes, the Union home ministry cancelled the foreign funding licence of a non-governmental organisation run by Wangchuk. On September 26, he was detained under the draconian NSA.
"I am doing well, both physically and mentally and thank everyone for their concern and prayers," Wangchuk said in his message. He also extended support to the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the KDA's demand for implementation of the Sixth Schedule and restoration of statehood.
"I stand firmly with Apex Body and the KDA and the people of Ladakh in our genuine constitutional demand for Sixth Schedule and Statehood and whatever actions Apex Body takes in the interest of Ladakh, I am with them , wholeheartedly," he added.
The LAB and the KDA earlier pulled out of the October 6 talks with Union government.
On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear a plea by Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali J Angmo, challenging his detention under NSA....
