Appointment of non-Muslims in MP Waqf board sparks controversy
Bhopal, July 7 -- Members of Madhya Pradesh's Muslim community and state opposition leaders on Monday said they intended to move the Supreme Court against the appointment of a BJP leader and a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary to the state Waqf Board as non-Hindu representatives.
The All India Muslim Teohar Committee staged protests in several cities. In Bhopal, convener Shamshul Hasan led a rally in the walled city to demand the move's withdrawal. "Waqf is a religious and social institution of the Muslim community, where people dedicate their property for the sake of God... Will they allow a non-Hindu in panels for religious places like Ram temple in Ayodhya, Somnath temple in Gujarat and Mahakal temple in Ujjain?"
"When certain points of the bill were stayed by the apex court, why was the MP government in a hurry to impose it and reconstitute the committee?" Congress MLA Arif Masood said.
The board's chairman Sanwar Patel, however, said: "It was the apex court that allowed not more than three non-Muslims in the 11-member board, so there is no question of objection."
CM Mohan Yadav on Monday announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be tabled in the state assembly soon. The state government plans to approve the bill in the next cabinet meeting and it will likely be tabled during the five-day monsoon session from July 20-24....
