PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 19 -- The Allahabad high court on Friday heard parties concerned on amendment applications filed in suits related to the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah mosque dispute at Mathura. The court order is awaited on various applications moved in the matter. Justice Avnish Saxena adjourned the hearing till October 13 in the matter. To recall, the Hindu side has filed 18 suits seeking possession of 13.37 acre land after removal of the Shahi Eidgah Masjid as well as for restoration of the temple and for a permanent injunction. On August 1, 2024, the high court rejected applications of the Muslim side challenging the maintainability of suits of Hindu worshippers and held that all suits of Hindu worshippers are maintainable. In the same August 1 order, the court had also held that these suits are not barred by the Limitation Act, Waqf Act and Places of Worship Act,1991, which prohibits conversion of any religious structure as it existed on August, 15,1947. The Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Eidgah Masjid case is a decades-old dispute pertaining to the site in Mathura where the Hindu side claims the mosque was constructed atop the birthplace of Lord Krishna in Mathura. The Muslim side rejects this claim. In May 2023, the Allahabad high court transferred all such suits on the issue from the Mathura court to itself. On December 14, 2023, the Allahabad high court allowed an application to appoint a court-monitored advocate commissioner to conduct a scientific survey of the Shahi Eidgah premises. On January 16, 2024, the Supreme Court stayed the Allahabad high court's order appointing an advocate commissioner to survey the Shahi Eidgah mosque adjoining the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta had called the application seeking the appointment of a local commissioner "vague"....
