Acid attack on nursing stray dog in city sparks outcry
Lucknow, Feb. 15 -- A female stray dog was seriously injured after acid was allegedly thrown on her in Phool Wali Gali in Chowk area of Lucknow late Thursday night. An animal welfare NGO has urged police action and stricter regulation of acid sale and storage in the locality.
According to the organisation, residents alerted volunteers about the incident late at night. On reaching the spot, they found the dog with chemical burns. She had recently given birth to six puppies, whose eyes have yet to open. A large portion of her body was affected, leaving her unable to move away from the site.
NGO members noted that this is the third such incident in the same locality in recent months. They expressed concern over the easy availability of acid in nearby shops, often kept in open or accessible spaces for occupational use. Such handling, they warned, increases the risk of misuse and accidents involving both animals and humans.
NGO volunteer Amar Rajput reached the site promptly, conducted a late-night rescue, and administered first aid before transferring the dog to a veterinary facility. She has been admitted for further treatment, including burn management and infection control.
"We found her in severe pain, with burns across much of her body. She had just delivered puppies and was trying to stay close to them. Our priority was to move her to treatment immediately," Rajput said.
Local residents expressed shock and concern. Nida, a resident of the area, said attacks on stray dogs were not uncommon. "This is not the first case. There have been other incidents in recent months," she said. Rahman Ali added, "If there are issues with stray dogs, authorities can be approached for removal or sterilisation. Such acts should never happen."
Assistant commissioner of police, Chowk, Raj Kumar Singh, confirmed that an application has been received and the police are investigating the incident....
