LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Aug. 31 -- A 70-year-old man was injured after being attacked by a tiger in Bharigawan forest beat of Mailani range in the Dudhwa buffer zone on Sunday afternoon, officials said. The victim, Jiyan Lal, a resident of Bharigawan village under Mailani police limits, suffered serious injuries to his face and shoulders. He was rushed to the Gola community health centre after receiving preliminary treatment at Mailani, officials said. Surendra Kumar Srivastava, range officer, Mailani forest range, told HT that Jiyan Lal was grazing his goats near a sugarcane field where a tiger was hiding. The field is close to the Mailani range forests. While Jiyan Lal was grazing his goats, the tiger emerged from its hiding place and attacked him. People working in nearby fields rushed to his rescue, following which the tiger disappeared into the dense sugarcane fields. Srivastava said pugmarks collected from the spot confirmed the animal was a tiger. He added that combing and patrolling were being carried out in the area to drive the big cat back into the forests.
