Silchar, Sept. 1 -- At least seven people were killed and six others were injured after a passenger traveller carrying them collided head-on with a goods truck on National Highway-27 in Assam's Kamrup Metro district, police said on Monday. According to police, the incident took place on Sunday in the Sonapur-Khetri area on the outskirts of Guwahati city, where three passengers died on the spot while around 12 injured were shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMHC). Four of them later succumbed to the injuries. "The accident took place at Nalagedera-Tetelia under Khetri Police Station in Kamrup Metropolitan district and as per the preliminary investigation, the passenger-carrying traveller was heading towards Guwahati from Nagaon when it hit a goods truck after losing control," officials said. The passenger vehicle was carrying around 14 passengers, the driver and one helper. The additional deputy commissioner (traffic), Guwahati, Safiqul Hussain said the vehicle lost control and crossed the divider before hitting the truck. He said that the police are examining the reason behind this, including the claim that it happened because of a pothole. The incident triggered anger among locals and a group of protesters on Monday morning blocked NH-27 alleging that accidents caused by potholes on the highway have become a regular occurrence and the local administration has been ignoring the matter. "This is not the first time, these potholes are claiming lives regularly. The highways are made for a certain speed and it is the responsibility of local administration to keep them safe but for years, the potholes are there," protesters said....
