7 killed, 19 injured as truck hits van carrying Durga idol in Maha
Nagpur, Oct. 3 -- A total of seven people were killed and 19 injured after a speeding truck rammed into a pickup van carrying a Durga idol near Dhamangaon on the Samruddhi Mahamarg in Maharashtra's Amravati district early Friday, police said.
The accident occurred around 3.30am near chainage 97, close to the Amravati-Dhamangaon railway stretch. The pickup was carrying the idol from Shegaon to Wardha when the truck hit it from behind, officials said.
According to police, the victims were young devotees and members of a temple group from Somnath Layout in Sindi Meghe, Wardha. They were returning home with the idol ahead of the Navratri festival.
Amravati (rural) superintendent of police Niketan Kadam said, "Five people died at the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries while being taken to hospital. The deceased were identified as Ghanshyam Patil, Praveen Bakane, Golu Badalgwar, Om Gawde, Dataji Khursage, Roshan Raut and one unidentified person."
The injured were taken to Dhamangaon Rural Hospital and later shifted to Adani Institute of Higher Education and Research in Wardha (formerly known as Datta Meghe Institute of Higher Education) for advanced treatment, police said, adding that at least five of them remained in critical condition.
SP Kadam, special inspector general of police Mahesh Patil and Dhamangaon municipal president Archana Rothe visited the accident site and hospital.
"Police teams reached immediately to initiate rescue operations. An investigation is underway," SP Kadam said....
