LUCKNOW, July 24 -- Seven people, including five from Tamil Nadu, were detained after villagers in Mohanlalganj alleged they were attempting to convert residents to Christianity by offering inducements, police said on Thursday. The incident took place in Bharswa village on Wednesday evening after residents gathered outside a house where the visitors were staying, alleging they had been active in village for some time and had lured people into converting. According to the complaint lodged by Amit Kumar, a resident of Debaria Bharswa village, accused had allegedly pressured him and others to embrace Christianity, claiming that attending church would bless childless couples with kids. When he objected, they allegedly told him they would continue their activities without fear. Amit further alleged that when he tried to stop group from leaving before police arrived, one of the accused threatened to run him over with a vehicle. "Police reached the spot after a Dial-112 call and took all seven people into custody. The group includes five persons from TN, while two are local residents," police said in a statement. ADCP (South) Vasanth Rallapalli said an FIR has been registered and the detained persons are being questioned. "Bank transactions and other evidence are being examined. Action will be taken against anyone found involved in illegal conversion activities," he said. Police said the investigation is underway. No further arrests have been made so far. htc...
