2700 lives saved since 2023, Agra teenager rescued within 11 mins
LUCKNOW, May 5 -- A 17-year-old student in Agra was rescued within 11 minutes of posting a suicide note on social media during the intervening night of May 4-5, following a breakup with his girlfriend.
This was made possible after a real-time alert was sent by Meta to the social media centre at the UP Police headquarters. The incident underscores the effectiveness of a technology-driven intervention system that has helped save around 2,700 lives of people attempting suicide across Uttar Pradesh since 2023, officials said in a press note on Monday.
"Between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Police responded to such alerts and helped save around 2,700 lives," officials said.
In the latest rescue in the Jaitpur police station area of Agra on the intervening night of May 3-4, the teenager uploaded a video on Instagram along with a suicide note, expressing distress after a breakup with his girlfriend. In the note, he apologised to his mother and indicated that he intended to end his life.
At 1:49 am, a real-time alert was sent by Meta to the social media centre at the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters. Acting swiftly, senior officials alerted field units after tracing the student's location using details linked to the post, the press note added.
On the directions of DGP Rajeev Krishna, a local police team rushed to the student's residence and arrived within 11 minutes. Officers alerted the family and quickly accessed the student's room, where he was found holding a bottle of pesticide, with a rope nearby, indicating he was preparing to take an extreme step.
The team intervened in time, secured the pesticide, and averted the attempt. He was later counselled in the presence of his family.htc...
