Kota, Aug. 27 -- A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Madhya Pradesh was found dead in her rented flat in Kota, police said on Wednesday, suspecting it to be a case of suicide. According to the police, the student, a resident of MP's Chhatarpur, allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday evening at a multi-storey residential complex in the Kunhadi police station area. She had been living in Kota with her younger sister and was preparing for the NEET examination at a private coaching institute. The sisters had been living in Kota since 2023 and moved into the rented flat in July, police said. Station house officer Devesh Bhardwaj said the younger sister returned to the flat after coaching classes and knocked on the door, but received no response for a long time. "She then alerted other residents of the building. After the flat was opened, the elder sister was found dead inside the room," Bhardwaj said. Police reached the spot after receiving information and took the student to MBS Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her body has been kept in the hospital mortuary and her family has been informed. Police said the post-mortem examination would be conducted after the family reaches Kota. Bhardwaj said no suicide note had been found in the room so far. Police are examining the room and gathering information about the circumstances surrounding the student's death. While the elder sister was preparing for NEET, the younger sister was preparing for an engineering entrance examination, police said. Fifty-five students died by suicide in Rajasthan between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025, including 28 in Kota, according to the state government's reply to a question raised in the Assembly by Congress MLA Amin Kagzi. Kota accounted for the largest share of student suicides in the state, highlighting the scale of the mental health crisis in Rajasthan's biggest coaching hub. The city recorded 16 student suicides in 2024 and 12 in 2025. Jaipur reported six cases over the two years, including the suicide of a nine-year-old Class 5 student at a private school. Her family accused the school management and teachers of negligence. Sikar, another major coaching centre, recorded five student suicides during the period. Bharatpur and Didwana-Kuchaman reported three cases each, while Jodhpur West, Sri Ganganagar and Ajmer recorded two cases each. The distribution of cases shows that student suicides were concentrated in districts with prominent coaching institutes and educational centres. The government attributed the deaths to academic pressure, mental stress, depression, family problems and examination-related disappointment.
