14 years on, absconding life-term convict arrested in Ahmedabad
Lucknow, Feb. 15 -- The Government Railway Police (GRP), Lucknow, has arrested a 50-year-old man, who had been absconding for 14 years after being convicted in the 2012 murder of a railway cabinman in Rae Bareli. Sant Kumar was carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 on his arrest and was apprehended from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, police said on Saturday.
He is being brought to Lucknow for completion of further legal formalities.
According to GRP officials, Sant Kumar had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in the murder case but had managed to evade arrest and remained on the run since then.
The case dates back to 2012 when a cabinman posted with the railways in Rae Bareli was found murdered. During investigation, police had found that the victim's son, along with three associates, had allegedly conspired to kill him and executed the crime. All the accused had fled after the incident.
Following trial proceedings, Sant Kumar was awarded life imprisonment. However, he continued to dodge arrest for years, frequently changing locations to avoid detection.
SP (GRP) Rohit Mishra said the accused had been living in Ahmedabad under a changed identity and was staying with his family to avoid suspicion.
Acting on the tip-off, the GRP team, with assistance from the local police in Ahmedabad, tracked down and arrested the accused. htc...
