dehradun, Oct. 2 -- Pauri police have put gym owner Deepak Kumar, also popularly known as Mohammad Deepak, under preventive arrest, following an alleged altercation with a local trader over a Facebook post on Thursday, officials said. Pauri SSP Sarvesh Panwar said Deepak Kumar was arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as a preventive measure. "He would be produced before the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) on Friday", he said. A person arrested under Section 170 cannot be kept in police custody for more than 24 hours unless a magistrate authorises further detention under another legal provision. Panwar said Deepak got into a scuffle with local trader Sanjeev Tank, allegedly threatened him and used abusive language. According to police, Deepak had posted a video on social media about the demolition of a mosque for road widening in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Tank, who runs Radhika Garments on Gangadutt Joshi Marg, commented on the post. He said Deepak took offence to the comment and visited Tank's shop on Thursday morning, where an altercation allegedly took place. Tank subsequently submitted a complaint. The Kotwali police took Deepak into custody and kept him in the lock-up. Meanwhile, a large number of local traders reached the Kotwali police station and staged a sit-in. Police assured the traders that action would be taken. The traders warned they would stage an agitation if police did not take strict action against him. Deepak earlier gained prominence after a January 2026 incident in Kotdwar in which he intervened during an altercation involving an elderly Muslim shopkeeper.
