Farooq, Omar convene civil society meet; pass resolution for statehood restoration
Srinagar, July 8 -- Ahead of its scheduled protest to demand statehood at Jantar Mantar, the ruling National Conference (NC) led by its president Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday convened a session of civil society members where a resolution was passed demanding restoration of full statehood to Jammu & Kashmir.
The party said that more than 150 representatives from various sections of J&K's civil society convened at Sher Kashmir International Convention Centre in Srinagar.
"Thankful to all the representatives of civil society of Kashmir who accepted the invitation. The meeting was extremely productive & Farooq Sahib was able to get a lot of useful feedback and good suggestions. The meeting passed a unanimous resolution calling on the Union Government to fulfil its promise & restore full statehood to J&K without further delay," Omar said.
The party is gearing up for its protest to demand statehood, at Jantar Mantar scheduled for July 20-first day of monsoon session, the decision regarding which was taken during a meeting held in Srinagar last month.
Farooq Abdullah has been holding a series of meetings with legislators and senior leaders on a daily basis to make the protest successful. He has also written letters to INDIA bloc partners seeking their support for the protest.
Party is also planning to hold rallies in Srinagar and Jammu over the weekend, the party leaders informed. J&K chief minister Omar and NC president Farooq, along with senior leaders, are expected to address these rallies.
The party said that the resolution at the civil society meet was a collective resolve of the people towards statehood demand. "The resolution reflects the collective and unanimous voice of the civil society representatives present at the meeting, reaffirming the broad-based demand for the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu & Kashmir," the party said in a statement.
Since coming to power in 2024, this will be the first time that NC legislators will hold a protest in New Delhi for statehood.
