Srinagar, Aug. 27 -- The second Suru Summer Festival began on Wednesday with focus on promoting Kargil as a sustainable, cultural and adventure tourism destination. Addressing the gathering, CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon called for collective efforts by tourism, culture departments, entrepreneurs and media to promote Kargil tourism nationally and internationally. He said the festival aims at showcasing Suru valley's natural beauty, cultural heritage and adventure potential, while creating livelihood for locals. "Suru valley's recognition by National Geographic and said tourism will benefit hoteliers, taxi operators, homestays, guides and artisans," he said. He said activities like rock climbing, paragliding and trekking can make Kargil a major adventure destination and stressed on sustainable development. He urged the media and influencers to become ambassadors of Kargil tourism. Tourism secretary, UT Ladakh, Sanjit Rodrigues said Suru valley has immense potential for adventure and community-based tourism and efforts are on to include Suru festival among Ladakh's nine state-level festivals. "Rising tourist footfall must benefit local communities and stress on eco-friendly, responsible tourism to protect the fragile Himalayan environment," he said, adding that the festival features cultural, music and adventure activities. htc...
