237 candidates withdraw from HP urban local body polls; 1,147 in fray
Shimla, May 7 -- As many as 1,147 candidates are in fray for the 51 urban local bodies polls after 237 candidates have withdrawn their nominations on Wednesday, said officials.
The Himachal Pradesh state election commission also allotted symbols to candidates.
According to the commission, a total of 1,426 nomination papers were initially filed. Of these, 32 were rejected during scrutiny, leaving 1,394 valid nominations. Subsequently, 237 candidates withdrew their papers on the last date of withdrawal, finalising the contesting candidates at 1,147. Polling is scheduled to be held on May 17 from 7 am to 3 pm through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The commission said that 10 candidates have been elected unopposed from various wards, including nagar panchayat Karsog, Jawalamukhi and Nerwa. No nomination was filed for Ward No. 7 of nagar panchayat Karsog in Mandi district.
Himachal Pradesh Congress committee chief (HPCC) Vinay Kumar on Wednesday said that the people of state will deliver a resounding response to the "injustice" done to them by BJP in the upcoming civic body polls.
"Congress will take BJP's anti-people policies and decisions directly to public. During disaster, BJP completely neglected affected people; moreover, to this day, they have prevented any assistance from the Centre from reaching state," said Vinay....
