Bhilwara, May 25 -- Union minister for law and justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said that implementing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam remains the government's top priority and efforts are underway to build political consensus for its implementation. Speaking to reporters during his visit to Bhilwara, Meghwal said the 2026 Budget Session was extended for three days - April 18, 19, and 20 - to discuss amendments required for implementing the Women's Reservation Act passed in 2023, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. He stated that the government held discussions with several political parties, but some parties later changed their stand. Referring to objections raised by parties like Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, he said concerns were expressed that the proposed formula could reduce representation for southern states. Meghwal added that Union home minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clarified the issue and appealed for support, but "confusion spread by Congress influenced other parties." Ajmer City District Congress Committee President Dr Rajkumar Jaipal has strongly criticized the statement made by Meghwal against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
