Villagers file memorandum against merger of schools
Barmer, May 1 -- A memorandum was submitted on Thursday to the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in Barmer by farmers from villages urging authorities not to merge government schools situated on land acquired for the Jalipa-Kapurdi lignite project without first ensuring proper relocation.
Farmers from villages including Chak Dholka, Veermnagar, and Lakhetali gathered at the district collectorate and submitted the memorandum, urging authorities not to merge the existing schools into other institutions without first ensuring proper relocation.
The farmers said the land on which these schools stand was originally donated by their ancestors to promote education in the region. "Our forefathers gave land to build these schools for future generations. Now a private company is demolishing them and pushing for their merger. If we are being resettled, the schools must also be shifted to those areas," they said.
Farmers alleged that despite repeated appeals over the past three years, the administration has remained largely unresponsive. They claimed that while compensation for land acquisition was paid by the private company, which is running ten units of lignite based thermal power having capacity of more then 1,000 MW, back in 2011, no concrete planning has been undertaken even after 15 years to relocate the schools.
Villagers claimed that the tenders have already been issued for demolishing the school buildings. They also expressed concern that company representatives have not engaged directly with the affected communities.
Currently, four government schools operate on the acquired land, including a senior secondary school in Chak Dholka and primary schools in Malani Dudiyon Ki Dhani, Madhal Ki Dhani, and Beniwalon Ki Dhani. Farmers warned that merging these schools elsewhere would severely impact children's education due to distance and accessibility issues.
Responding to the issue Rajendra Singh Chandawar, additional district collector in Barmer said, "Objections have been received from villagers regarding the schools. As per norms, coordination is being established with the company and the Education Department to ensure school shifting and the continuity of students' education. No step will be taken without proper arrangements."...
