Supergirl is not sexualised or put on pedestal: Director
India, June 26 -- As the DC Universe gears up for a new chapter with Supergirl, director Craig Gillespie says he was drawn to the opportunity to portray the superhero as complex, flawed and emotionally layered, rather than an untouchable symbol of strength.
"One of the things that excited me about this film is that you don't get to see a lot of really complicated, flawed female superheroes. They tend to be put on a pedestal," he tells us, adding, "She's not sexualised. That's another thing that's happened a lot in the comic book world. To be able to have her be who she is and unapologetic about it, I love that."
The filmmaker, known for movies such as I, Tonya (2017) and Cruella (2021), adds that he was attracted to the idea of the character sitting outside the traditional definition of heroism. "I seem to always be attracted to outsiders, misfits, people that are misunderstood and have this emotional journey and ultimately get appreciated for who they are," he shares, adding that Kara Zor-El is a complex superhero "dealing with so much trauma, running away from her responsibilities, and doing it with humour".
Having Milly Alcock in the lead role also helped. "It's a very rare thing as a director not to get to cast your lead. But I was so familiar with her work and excited that she was cast [since] she's an actor who can do humour and drama, strike that balance, and deliver emotion the way that she can," he shares....
