SHO suspended over PM event 'security lapse'
Barmer/Balotra, April 24 -- A man allegedly managed to access the VVIP stage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed event venue in Rajasthan's Balotra district on the eve of the programme, which was later postponed, police said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on April 20. PM Modi was scheduled to visit the place on April 21 to inaugurate HPCL Pachpadra refinery, but the visit was postponed following a fire incident at the refinery, said police.
Officers aware of the matter said the person has been identified as Arshad. He allegedly entered the restricted area and directly accessed the VVIP stage despite tight security arrangements.
They said the accused was booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, detained along with his cameraperson and released the same night after questioning.
Meanwhile, a station house officer (SHO) has been suspended in connection with the incident.
Preliminary investigation indicates negligence on the part of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) personnel deployed at the venue, who failed to prevent the youth from reaching the stage, the officials said.
Satyendra Singh, IG, Jodhpur Range Police termed the incident a serious lapse and said, "After the fire incident at the refinery, a youth named Arshad climbed onto the stage at the event site and also recorded a video there, which went viral on social media. This is a major security lapse. In view of this, the Pachpadra SHO, Achala Ram, has been suspended."
He added, "Also, a letter has been written to the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) Commandant to take action against the RAC personnel who was deployed at the venue," he said....
