Shame on us: John Abraham backs Indian footballers' plea
India, Jan. 6 -- Reacting to the uncertainty around the Indian Super League (ISL), actor and NorthEast United co-owner John Abraham called the current state of Indian football a "shame".
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently said that dates for the delayed 2025-26 ISL season would be announced next week, offering little clarity to clubs, players and staff struggling amid the suspension of domestic competition.
Sharing a video appeal by top ISL players including Sunil Chhetri and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, John wrote on social media: "Shame on us... this is what we have come to."
In the video, Chhetri can be heard saying, "Players, staff, owners and the fans deserve clarity, protection and, more importantly, a future."
The group also warned of escalating risk to the sport's ecosystem: "Indian football governance is no longer able to fulfil its responsibilities. We are now staring at a permanent paralysis. This is a last-ditch effort to save what we can. so we are calling FIFA to step in and do what it takes to save Indian football."
The crisis had earlier been flagged by former India captain Sandesh Jhingan, who told HT City, "Most of the clubs are on the brink of dissolving... All the people who were on the Messi tour, you will hardly see them at a national team game. If you can spend lakhs on one match between Real Madrid and Barcelona and hesitate to spend a few thousand to watch Indian football, that difference needs to be spoken about." htc...
