Ravana trying to save Ramayana?
India, Oct. 23 -- Actor-producer Yash has a request for audiences ahead of the November 5 release of Ramayana: Rise of a Legend: "Don't nitpick". Speaking at an event in Hyderabad on Monday, the actor, who plays Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari's two-part epic, defended co-producer Namit Malhotra, saying, "He has gambled his reputation and money to put this film on a global platform. Please don't try to find small faults in the VFX, this and that. It will never happen again if we lose people like him now."
However, his appeal has triggered fresh backlash too. Here's what has sparked debate, so far.
His request to overlook minor flaws has drawn criticism from viewers questioning why they should lower expectations for a film reportedly mounted on a Rs.4,000-crore budget. "Indian audiences are already consuming world-class cinema and series on OTT platforms. It's time to raise the bar," wrote one user. Another commented, "Place the energy into content creation and there will be no need to use patriotism to sell the product."
The Dussehra release of the song Ravana Tandav brought fresh criticism. While Yash's performance and choreography won praise, sections of the audience found AR Rahman's music underwhelming, with some questioning his suitability for the epic. "Replace Rahman with Ajay-Atul in sequel, they would kill it for sure," read one comment. Others defended the composer and praised the sequence's visuals.
Since the first glimpse and trailer, viewers have questioned the film's CGI, colour grading and depiction of demons, while Ranbir Kapoor's casting as Lord Ram has also divided opinion. The costumes haven't escaped scrutiny either. Sai Pallavi's Sita wearing stitched blouses has raised questions about period authenticity, while Lara Dutta's Kaikeyi has drawn comparisons to television mythological shows. Rakul Preet Singh's Shurpanakha look has also been questioned. Costume designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula have defended the styling as a creative interpretation rather than a historically accurate reconstruction. Meanwhile, Delhi-based Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has sought a pre-release screening to check for portrayals that could hurt religious sentiments. Citing the Adipurush (2023) controversy, its president Arjun Kumar has warned of protests if the request is ignored.htc...
