JODHPUR/JAIPUR, Sept. 22 -- The Rajasthan High Court opened for urgent hearings on Monday, a public holiday for Baba Ramdev Jayanti, as candidates and councillors approached it with allegations of arrest threats, abduction and detention ahead of municipal chairperson elections. The hearings were held at the Jodhpur principal bench and Jaipur bench on the directions of Chief Justice Sanjay K Agrawal. Five urgent matters were taken up. At Jodhpur, the court declined relief to petitioner Vandana Jain, who alleged she was being threatened over an FIR concerning a 2003 incident. The court noted that her name did not figure in the FIR or police report, sought the case diary and listed the matter for September 23. In another case, Sri Vijaynagar chairperson candidate Sushil Midha alleged three elected ward members travelling to vote for him were attacked and abducted. The court issued notices and directed that the election result remain subject to the outcome of the petition. In a habeas corpus case, Shashi alleged her husband Vijay Kumar was abducted near Bajuwala. The court directed the Sri Ganganagar SP to trace him by 4 pm and ensure he was given an opportunity to vote. At Jaipur, the court granted interim protection from arrest to Kekri chairperson candidate Anil Mittal in a case alleging he offered gratification to councillors, until October 7. In Tijara, the court declined to defer the election over alleged detention of councillors but said elected councillors could not be prevented from voting according to their free will....
