Posters against ex-MLA Jain's return to Cong, complaint filed
Barmer, Sept. 28 -- Controversy has erupted in Barmer following the return of former MLA Mewaram Jain to the Congress party. Hours before his scheduled arrival in Barmer on Saturday, objectionable posters and hoardings featuring his alleged obscene photographs were put up across several prominent locations in Barmer, Baytu, and Balotra.
The posters carried slogans such as "Barmer shamed, Congress will not tolerate insult to women, rapists not welcome." They bore the name of the Barmer-Jaisalmer-Balotra District Congress Committee, though the party has strongly denied any involvement.
District Congress leaders, including Balotra president Goparam Meghwal, Jaisalmer president Ummed Singh Tanwar, and Barmer president Gafur Ahmed, issued a joint statement clarifying that the posters were the work of unidentified individuals and not linked to the party.
"This is an attempt to malign the Congress organization by misusing its name. Strict legal action will be taken against those responsible," the statement read.
Municipal council commissioner Surendra Singh Rajawat said the posters were removed as soon as authorities became aware. He confirmed that action will be taken against those who put them up without permission.
Responding to the issue, former MLA Mewaram Jain accused rivals of spreading malice. "When the court has already given me a clean chit, such acts show the lowest form of politics. My photo was edited and misused in posters to disturb harmony. A complaint has been filed against those involved, including printing press owners and contractors," he said.
Jain was expelled from the Congress on January 7, 2024, after being accused in a gang rape case filed in Jodhpur on December 20, 2023, under 18 sections including Pocso. Soon after, a video allegedly involving him surfaced on social media, leading to his suspension by state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra. Jain was out of the party for 20 months before his reinstatement by the Congress Disciplinary Committee on September 22.
His lawyer, Surtan Singh, said the former legislator had been acquitted and a complaint has been lodged over the posters....
