Police warns of fraud using call forwarding
Jaipur, March 19 -- The cyber crime branch of Rajasthan Police has intensified its awareness drive against online fraud and issued a fresh advisory on a new and sophisticated scam involving USSD-based call forwarding.
Officials said cyber criminals are now posing as delivery agents from reputed courier, e-commerce and food delivery platforms to gain control over victims' mobile phones and siphon off money from their bank accounts within minutes.
DIG (Cyber Crime) Shantanu Kumar Singh said that in this modus operandi, fraudsters call victims pretending to be delivery personnel, claiming they are unable to locate the address or need verification for parcel delivery. They lure victims with the promise of immediate delivery and then, citing a technical issue, pressure them into dialling specific codes on their phones.
Police said the scam revolves around activating call forwarding through USSD codes. Victims are asked to dial codes such as *21, *67 or *61 along with a mobile number provided by the fraudster. Once dialled, all incoming calls-including OTPs and bank verification calls-get diverted to criminal's number, enabling them to access bank accounts and digital wallets.
The cyber branch has urged citizens not to dial any code on instructions from unknown callers, even if they claim to be delivery agents. People have been advised to verify parcels only through official apps.htc...
