One charred to death as tanker overturns
Barmer/Sanchore, March 19 -- One person was charred to death after a tanker transporting ethanol overturned and burst into flames on a stretch of National Highway-48 in Rajasthan's Jalore district on Wednesday, police said.
According to police, the incident occurred around 2pm near the Sinwara overbridge. The tanker, bearing a Gujarat registration number, was en route from Barmer to Gujarat. While descending the overbridge, the vehicle reportedly lost balance and overturned toward the service road.
Soon after the tanker overturned, a highly flammable substance began leaking, police said. Due to the downward slope of the overbridge, the fuel flowed along the road, igniting quickly and spreading flames across a stretch of nearly 200 meters.
Chittalwana SHO Bhanwar Lal said the nature of the flammable substance which the tanker was carrying is yet to be ascertained.
The driver, Sukhram Meghwal (34), a resident of Barmer district, was unable to escape and was burnt alive inside. While the helper, Narsiram Meghwal (26), managed to jump out of the vehicle. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable.
Officials, including SDM Pramod Kumar and police teams, quickly reached the location to manage the situation and control traffic on the busy highway.
Authorities have begun a probe into the cause of the accident.
Preliminary indications suggest a mechanical failure-possibly a tyre burst or loss of balance-but the exact reason is yet to be confirmed....
