Mumbai police take 3 accused on transit remand from Kota
Jaipur, Oct. 21 -- Mumbai Police on Tuesday took the three accused in the attack on actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai on transit remand in Kota after a coordinated operation that led to their arrest on Monday. The team left Kota after taking the three accused in custody following local court granting a 48-hour transit remand for further investigation.
Kota SP Tejaswini Gautam and Mumbai Crime Branch DCP Raj Tilak Roshan, both 2013-batch IPS officers, coordinated the interception.
SP Gautam said she received information around 9.30 am on Monday that the three suspects were approaching Kota by train.
"After receiving information from Mumbai Police, we assembled 25 to 30 police personnel within just 10 minutes and laid a trap to apprehend the accused".
Seven teams were formed for the operation, according to Gautam. With little time to prepare, officers used a WhatsApp group to coordinate deployment and share updates on the suspects' movements.
Police said squads positioned themselves on the platform and along the tracks when the train reached Kota Junction. Personnel were also deployed at the outer approaches and other exit points to prevent the suspects from escaping if they became suspicious. The three were travelling in a general coach, Gautam said.
Two of the suspects were standing near the coach door, buying pakodas from a vendor, while the minor was asleep on an upper berth, police said.
"Two personnel opened the coach door and apprehended the two accused standing there. Two police personnel verified their identities and shared an update on the WhatsApp group. Personnel then entered the coach to complete the operation," Gautam said.
The biggest challenge, she said, was to apprehend all three almost simultaneously in a crowded compartment, even though they were in different positions inside the coach.
An officer involved in the operation, speaking on condition of anonymity, told HT that when personnel woke the minor, he mistook them for a travelling ticket examiner (TTE). He told them that a TTE had already issued him a receipt for travelling without a ticket. The officer said this led police to suspect that the three had travelled without tickets from Mumbai to Surat and then boarded a Jaipur-bound train. A TTE checking tickets along the way had apparently issued them a penalty receipt, the officer said.
The police team boarded the general coach around 10.17 am, and the suspects were apprehended before they could understand what was happening, police said, adding, the operation was completed in 15 minutes.
Gautam said that during the initial interrogation, Rehan and the minor allegedly admitted to involvement in similar crimes in Noida and Amritsar.
Police officers said Rehan, one of the three suspects, was in contact with Anil Pandit, described by investigators as a foreign-based handler of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. An officer involved in the operation told HT that Rehan had come into contact with Pandit through his friend Sameer, a resident of Sonipat.
Rajasthan Police subsequently alerted their counterparts in Haryana, and Sameer was detained in Sonipat, according to police officers.
Gautam said her previous posting in Bikaner had helped her understand the methods used by members of such criminal networks. "I previously served as Bikaner SP. Rohit Godara, a former associate of Lawrence Bishnoi who later became his rival, is also from Bikaner. During my tenure, Bikaner Police conducted several operations to apprehend members of Godara's gang. I had an understanding of their modus operandi, which proved very helpful," she told HT.
The firing took place around 7 pm on Sunday near Pushpa Narsee Park in Mumbai's Juhu-Vile Parle area, where assailants allegedly shot at Shroff's car.
Police identified the two adults as Rehan alias Sukka, 18, a resident of Idgah Colony in Haryana's Sonipat, and Hrithik Kurmi alias Roshan Fighter, 22, a resident of Bihar's Begusarai who currently lives in Mumbai's Andheri West. The third suspect is a minor, also from Sonipat....
