India, Aug. 5 -- Common strap: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has tightened enforcement, barring Indian consumer goods company Dabur from selling products with unverifiable "100%" claims. This regulation comes days after the regulator cracked down upon several alcoholic beverage manufacturers over alleged flavouring violations. Box 1: On August 4, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released a statement on social media barring Dabur from selling certain food products carrying misleading "100%" claims. The regulation states that the brand's labels such as "100% Natural", "100% Pure", "100% Organic" and "100% Purity Guaranteed" are ambiguous, unverifiable and violate the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising & Claims) Regulations, 2018. The regulator also found that Dabur Himalayan Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Dabur Organic Honey displayed the Jaivik Bharat logo (an official identification mark) without valid organic endorsement by FSSAI, while Dabur Hommade Coconut Milk was marketed with an impermissible "100% Purity" claim. FSSAI further said the company failed to take satisfactory corrective action despite an earlier notice and has directed it to immediately stop selling the affected products. Box 2: On August 2, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) named several alcoholic beverage manufacturers for adding flavours that mimic the beverage's own natural profile, such as rum flavour in rum or whisky flavour in whisky, a practice it says is not permitted. FSSAI clarified that flavouring substances themselves are not banned, but their use in this manner violates regulations. The notice covered United Spirits' Baramati plant which produces McDowell's No.1 Rum as well as the Madhya Pradesh plant which produces Antiquity Blue Whisky and Royal Challenge Whisky, along with manufacturers INBREW Beverages, Mohan Rocky Springwater, Associated Alcohol & Breweries. It has also done "inspections and sampling" in Goa from the premises of Mandexi Distilleries & Breweries, while "notices have been issued to six other manufacturers in the State of Maharashtra in this case and further necessary action to follow soon," said the statement.
