Barmer, July 11 -- Pleading for immediate government intervention to save their livestock, residents of Barmer's border villages have urged the administration to open cattle relief camps as the prolonged absence of monsoon rains has pushed the region into drought-like conditions. With virtually no rainfall recorded so far this season, sowing has been severely affected, but villagers say the worst-hit are their cattle, which have started dying due to an acute shortage of fodder and water. At present the failure of the monsoon has disrupted agricultural activities across the border belt, leaving farmers unable to undertake timely sowing. Villagers said the livestock crisis has become even more alarming, as grazing lands have dried up completely and several cattle have already started dying. They warned that unless cattle camps are opened immediately, death toll among livestock could rise sharply in the coming days. A delegation from Gadra Road and surrounding villages on Friday submitted a memorandum to the local administration, addressed to chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, demanding the immediate establishment of cattle camps along with assured supplies of fodder, drinking water and veterinary healthcare. "Every day without rain is pushing us closer to disaster. We can endure hardship ourselves, but we cannot bear to watch our speechless animals suffer... If the government does not open cattle camps immediately, we will be left helplessly watching them die of hunger and thirst," said Kishanlal Sundesh, a social worker. "We are not asking for compensation-we are asking for the basic support needed to keep our livestock alive until the rains arrive..," said Govindram Chauhan, a leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh. The villagers also warned that if immediate relief measures are not announced, they will be forced to launch an indefinite protest outside the tehsil office. Gadara Road SDM Suresh Kumar told HT that he was unaware of any cattle deaths. He, however, confirmed that villagers had submitted a memorandum to the Tehsildar seeking relief measures....
